Deities -Juracan

Description

Juracán, the Taino Goddess of chaos, disorder, hurricanes and other evil weather. There really isn’t much information on her or any Taino deities at all online. None even offline in Spanish or English. I had to base her off of her symbol, which is on her skirt. I’m not 100% sure if the thing on her head is a headdress or hair, when I looked up Taino people none of them had hairdos like that. I also only saw feather headdresses…the only thing I knew for sure was the clothing and the fact that the women have long hair. Some websites said that she was associated with all evil but I don’t know how valid that claim is.

Here is some information I found that seemed to be a constant in all of the retellings:

The name Juracan is actually just what the Taino called hurricanes...the actual name of the Goddess is Guabancex. The reason she is the Goddess of chaos as well is that her whole thing was disturbing the balance. She would disrupt the domains of Boinayel and Marohu, the deities of rain and drought, by swirling her arms around and destroying everything. Guabancex would also threaten other deities in order to get them to participate in the chaos, the deity of rain and thunder was often always by her side. She would supposedly get in fights with Yucahu, a supreme creator deity and God of agriculture and fertility, by going to his mountain home with her friends.
Her minions were Guatauba, God of thunder who announced her arrival and Coatrisque who brought the floods. Guabancex was the God of the winds. Together the three would make the most damage out of natural disasters for the Taino, devastating winds, floods and tide surges. The mountains were seen as a blockage, they are a natural hurricane barrier. Guabancex would try to go there with her enablers and fight Yucahu, but he would fight her back to protect his people. (Fun fact about Yucahu, he has no father, only a mother)
